At the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York City,
the announcer introduces the competing dogs, listing their breeds from A to Z.
”The Akita is the Treasure of Japan,” he might say and continue with text something like this: ”The Akita is a loyal, alert dog with a strong personality
and muscular body. The breed is well-known for its intelligence, and Its
movements are agile and deliberate. Altogether these traits give
the Akita its esteemed personality.”

We have had Akitas as our treasured dogs for over 40 years. Our current Akita, Chakita, has been with us for 12 years, making her the oldest of our dogs.

Her name, Cha-kita, was devised by Jim Smith, “cha” referencing a series of Brazilian prints I made earlier and “akita” for her breed. She was born June 4, 2009, and it must be noted that her father, Coupe, an all-around magnificent champion, was raised and nurtured by Stacey Boremann of MOJO AKITAS in California. Chakita was part of a large litter and came to us as a companion dog. She is highly intelligent, sweet, and determined to be part of the action at our house even as she ages. She has defended us from the UPS person, pharmacy delivery boy, flower delivery woman, workmen of every type, and
even my studio assistant, whom she sees every week.

Her black head and the black thumbprint fur on her white body make her a mysterious dog with a floating white body at night and Zorro head during the day. Chakita doesn’t pose, she just happens.
